Artwork

This is one of my favourite pieces titled "Grasp". Spending between five to eight hours a day I worked on it over the space of five weeks.

It covers most of what I have a strong interest in. Our bodies and what's underneath the skin, the way we move in certain ways. Human form and anatomy is something I find very intriguing. It also has lots of plants and a few animals, some of my favourite things to study in art and in life. So this piece was very fun to do but also challenging since it's a bit different than what I usually do in terms of composition.

For this piece and all my pieces I used Arches 640gsm cold pressed rough watercolour paper. I find this paper to have an overall gorgeous look and feel to it. It holds up well which is important for me as an artist because I tend to pile paper upon paper and occasionally bump into the edges of it. Since it's so tough this isn't an issue and I like the rough edges so it's not a problem. I think it also suits my art because it has this natural rustic kind of look to it which adds character.

For pens, I switched between my usual Mitsubishi Uni Pin Fine Liners and a new pen I've been trying out. These pens are from Graph It. I find they have a lot of ink and they do look fantastic, but I think they're just a bit less sturdy than the Mitsubishi ones. Those ones hold up a lot better in my opinion.

So overall this was a fun piece to do. I found myself sort of struggling to finish it. I think that was mainly due to it being different but also because I have a tendency to think of ideas for other pieces while in the middle of one. Which you can probably guess makes me want to finish the current piece quickly because I'm so excited about the new idea. This piece really showed me this is something I probably need to work on as an artist.
